HE the Minister of Information, Mohamed Abdi Hayir 'Mareye', briefed the media on the development and security activities of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) in past week.
HE the Minister detailed activities that took place in the past week including: HE the President of Somalia signed the Political Parties Law; Danab Commandos killed an al-Shabaab commander and 6 fighters in Qoryoley, Lower Shabelle; the foundations of a new police station were laid down in Waberi, Mogadishu; the Somali National Army (SNA) retook Abdalla Birole neighborhood in Jubbaland; Somali and Sudan signed an education agreement; unlawful structures were demolished in Mogadishu; a water borehole was established at Bondhere Orphan Center; HE the President announced a government job scheme as part of the election process; the National Consultative Conference was held in Mogadishu; the foundations of a health centre were ladi down in Kahda, Mogadishu; apprentices departed for Kenya to train as Air Traffic Controllers; and HE the President of Puntland laid down the cornerstone for a hospital in Galkayo, Mudug.
HE the President of Somalia Signed the Political Parties Law
On September 5th 2016, HE the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, signed into law the Political Parties Bill ahead elections which are scheduled to take place in the coming months.
The signing ceremony was held at Presidential Palace in Villa Somalia, Mogadishu, and was attended by the Speaker of the Somali Federal Parliament, Professor Mohamed Osman Jawari, UN Special Representative of the Secretary General, Michael Keating as well as senior politicians from across the country.
HE the President spoke after the signing ceremony, noting that the legislation, which was passed by the Parliament in June of this year, will enhance the political process.
Danab Commandos Killed an al-Shabaab Commander, 6 fighters in Qoryoley, Lower Shabelle
Danab Commandos launched a military operation in Qoryoley, Lower Shabelle, killing an al-Shabaab commander along with 6 fighters as they tried to flee into neighbouring Middle Shabelle.
The spokesman of the Ministry of Internal Security, Abdikamil Moalin Shukri confirmed the operation, noting that the SNA is constantly launching operations into the few remaining areas of the country that are still controlled by al-Shabaab and will continue to do so until the threat of al-Shabaab is removed.
Foundations of a New Police Station Laid Down in Waberi, Mogadishu
On September 7th 2016, the Somali Police Commissioner, General Mohamed Hassan Hamud and the Governor of Banadiir & Mayor of Mogadishu, HE Yusuf Hussein Jimale, jointly laid down the corner stone for a new police station in the Waberi district of Banadir region.
The new structure adjoins Aden Adde International Airpor, and was facilitated by Banadir Regional Authority.
HE the Mayor of Mogadishiu comment: "This structure has been funded through the ‘Build Your Nation’ project which Banadir Region instituted specifically for the development of the capital.
The Somali Police Commissioner welcomed the construction of the new police station, noting that it would make a major difference to local security and thanked the Banadir Regional Authority for its efforts in enhancing security and development.
SNA Retake Abdalla Birole in Jubbaland
On September 7th, 2016, the SNA in conjunction with Jubbaland and AMISOM forces re-took Abdalla Birole, about 50 km south west of Kismayo.
The area had been controlled for some time by al-Shabaab.
A military spokesman noted that military operations would continue until the threat of al-Shabaab is removed.
Somalia and Sudan Sign Education Agreement
HE the Minister of Education, Abdullkadir Abdi Hashi, and his Sudanese counterpart, Dr Sumaya Abu Kashwah, met in Khartoum to discuss strengthening relations between the two countries.
The Sudanese Government agreed to increase the number of scholarships offered to Somalis for Masters and Doctoral degrees, supplementing previous scholarships for Bachelor’s degrees.
HE the Minister of Education noted that the scholarships offered a great opportunity for students in Somalia, often allowing them to study subjects that were not yet available in their own country.
Unlawful Structures Demolished in Mogadishu
On September 7th 2016, Somali security forces launched operations to demolish illegal buildings and business premises near Aden Adde International Airport.
The Police Commissioner of Banadiir Region, Col. Bishar Abshir Geddi, spoke to the local media, explaining that the operations targeted illegal construction, a phenomenon that has been increasing in the recent months.
The Police Commissioner went on to note that the land belonged to the government and that the operation was part of a broader programme to restore the beauty of the city of Mogadishu.
The Governor of Banadiir Region & Mayor of Mogadishu, Yusuf Hussein Jimale, has given warning to those behind these illegal constructions that they will lose their investments and be subject to the law for their activities.
Water Borehole Established at Bondhere Orphan Centre, Mogadishu
On September 7th 2016, the District Commissioner of Bondhere district, Mogadishu, Kassin Abdullahi Hassan, accompanied by the Acting Manager of Bondhere Orphanage Girls Centre, Zakariye Nur Abukar, laid down the corner stone of water borehole drilling project at the centre.
The District Commissioner noted that the funds for the first phase of the construction of the borehole had been donated by Bondhere District and urged wealthy individuals in the local community to support the remainder of the planned project in the knowledge that blessings would be theirs for their good deeds.
HE the President Announces Government Job Scheme as Part of Election Process

National Consultative Forum Held in Mogadishu
On September 7th 2016, the National Consultative Forum (NCF) reconvened in the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, chaired by HE the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The NCF brought together the Federal and Regional State leaders for the last time before the national elections.
In an opening ceremony attended by HE the Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Osman Jawaari, HE the Prime Minister, Omar Abdirahid Sharmarke, HE the Deputy PM, Mohamed Omar Arte, the Regional State Presidents of South West, Jubbaland, Galmudug and Puntland, representatives of the international community and other distinguished guests, HE the President acknowledged that this meeting was significant since the election process had already begun and stressed the urgency of the issues to be discussed including security, election funding and other matters of process.
Foundations of Health Centre Laid Down in Kahda, Mogadishu
HE the State Minister of the Office of the Prime Minister, Abdirahman Kulmiye Hersi (Cabdiraxmaan Dheere) and the District Commissioner of Kahda District, Mogadishu, Mohamed Ismail, laid down the foundations of a new heath Centre.
The District Commissioner of Kehda District also acknowledged the State Minister’s generous offer of a donation of sports equipments to the District’s Sporting Group.
Apprentices Depart For Kenya to Train as Air Traffic Controllers
On September 5th 2016, HE the State Minister of the Ministry of Transport & Civil Aviation Authority, Mohamed Isack Osman ‘Fanah’, announced that the departure of 30 apprentice air traffic controllers to Kenya.
The group will receive training in the technical aspects of air control and aviation practices and, upon their return, will contribute greatly to the safety and security of Somali airspace.
HE the President of Puntland Laid Down Cornerstone for Hospital in Galkayo ,Mudug
HE the President of Puntland Regional State, Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas, accompanied by HE the Deputy President, Abdihakim Abdullahi Hagi Omar Amey, and HE the Deputy Speaker of the Federal Parliament, Mahad Abdalla Awad, laid down the foundation of buildings as part of the general refurbishment of Galkayo Hospital in Mudug.
The occasion was attended by various ministers, members of parliament, Galkayo Hospital staff, the Hospital Reconstruction Committee, senior SNA officers and officials from the Office of the Puntland Presidency.
HE the President of Puntland noted that the refurbishment of the hospital came just after the city of Galkayo suffered twin terrorist outrages perpetrated by al-Shabaab terrorists against the Xero Dayax City Market and the City Hall, both adjacent to the Galkayo District General Hospital, noting the role of the hospital and its staff in treating the injured.
Dr Abdiweli concluded by encouraging the business community, the Diaspora and the Somali people in general to contribute in any way they can to the ongoing reconstruction and renovation of the hospital.
