Security forces loyal to National Security Advisor Fahad Yasin arrived Saturday morning in Beletweyne ahead of an election in which the former intelligence chief is contesting.
The Waran unit of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) landed at Ugaas Khalif Airport where the election is expected to take place on Sunday. The election is one of the most-watched as Yasin, who has had a controversial history during the Mohamed Farmaajo administration will be heading to parliament.
The current occupant of the seat-Farah Abdulkadir, the once-powerful justice minister during the presidency of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is currently out of the country for medical treatment according to sources.
Prime Minister Mohamed Roble had reportedly called for a postponement of the election last week to allow for the return of Abdulkadir who is expected to defend his seat.
Yasin, who is expected to clinch the seat with little resistance will now join the growing clique of Farmaajo henchmen who have been serving in the intelligence sector but now joining parliament.
Yasin’s predecessor Yasin Farey and another senior NISA official Abdullahi Kulane have both been elected MPs in Galmudug.
