In a coordinated effort, Somali government forces arrested Sayid Ali Moalin Haji Daoud on Tuesday for a barbaric act against his pregnant wife, allegedly setting her on fire in late January. This appalling incident has sparked widespread outrage across Somalia.


The operation, involving police, security forces, and public defenders, targeted Daoud in the Adeiley area, where he was apprehended after attempting to hide. Furthermore, two of Daoud's alleged accomplices, Ingris Fanaxeey and Abdirisaq Moalin Daoud Aluke, were detained in the Gawaan area of the Mudug region for aiding his escape attempt by boat.

Luul Abdiaziz, a dedicated worker at Aden Adde Airport and a mother of six, tragically lost her life along with her unborn child in this senseless act. This heartbreaking event, fueled by jealousy and cruelty, highlights the grave dangers faced by women in Somalia due to domestic violence.

The Somali Police Command has confirmed the arrests, promising rewards to those instrumental in the operation. However, these arrests shed light on a broader issue of gender-based violence in Somalia, exemplified by the recent deaths of three women in marriage disputes within a single week. This systemic problem is exacerbated by the lack of robust legal frameworks and support systems for victims.

The public outcry following these incidents has led to calls from parliament for urgent investigations. Additionally, the arrest of another individual in Afgooye, armed with gasoline and a matchbox and allegedly intending to harm his family, underscores the urgent need to address this pressing issue.
