The deal for the Mombasa-Nairobi railway was signed at State House, with China Exim Bank undertaking to provide 90% of the cost of the 609km line.

The deal was witnessed by presidents Salva Kiir of South Sudan, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

Of the historic deal, President Uhuru Kenyatta said, "We gather today to observe the signing of agreements for the new standard gauge railway whose construction will connect one end of Kenya to another, and eventually unify all of East Africa, from the ocean to the mountains of the interior."

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang added: "This is indeed a major undertaking that will boost the connectivity and integration of the east African sub-region."

According to Bloomberg, construction on the railway line will start in October this year.
