23rd, June, 2014 - AMISOM forces have conducted airstrikes in Anole and Kuday in the Lower Jubba region as part of a sustained effort to destroy Al Shabaab's military capabilities.
The airstrikes in Anole left more than 30 Al Shabaab fighters dead, 3 technical vehicles and one Land Cruiser loaded with ammunition destroyed. In Kuday, the airstrike killed more than 50 insurgents. AMISOM continues to up the pressure on al Shabaab with a view to liberating more areas in forthcoming operations.
The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) Ambassador Mahamat Saleh Annadif commended the KDF contingent of AMISOM for the operation’s success.
"Our forces will relentlessly keep up the pressure on Al Shabaab and we will employ all the means at our disposal to end their reign of terror,” said Ambassador Annadif while lauding the surgical precision of the airstrikes. "We are here to work with the Somali forces to make life better for Somalia and her people. Fundamental to that is eliminating the insurgents who have wrought havoc and misery to so many and for so long.”
The airstrikes complement the ongoing joint offensive between the Somali National Army and AMISOM forces. More than 10 key towns have been liberated in this offensive as part of a final push to liberate Somalia from the brutal grip of Al Shabaab.
