In the latest development at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the United States has signaled its intention to veto a resolution put forward by Algeria calling for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in the conflict between Israel and Gaza.


US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, affirmed the stance, stating that the resolution, if brought to a vote as currently drafted, would not gain adoption. The US cited concerns that the resolution could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, aimed at achieving a weeks-long truce and facilitating humanitarian aid access to Gaza.

The proposed ceasefire resolution comes amidst escalating tensions, with fears mounting over a potential ground invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza by Israeli forces. Such a move, humanitarian agencies and the UN warn, could have catastrophic consequences for the approximately 1.4 million Palestinians residing in the area.

The US's use of its veto power to support Israel at the Security Council has been a recurrent pattern throughout the conflict. This latest development underscores the challenges in reaching consensus within the international community on efforts to address the protracted violence and humanitarian crisis in the region.

Efforts to broker a ceasefire have faced setbacks in recent weeks, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissing Hamas's demands as "ludicrous," and mediators expressing pessimism about the progress of negotiations.

As the Security Council deliberates on the resolution, there is a growing urgency to find a diplomatic solution that addresses the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected population and paves the way for a sustainable peace in the region.
