Witnesses on Monday said a Somali civilian was shot and killed by African Union peacekeepers in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.

The victim, about 50 years old, worked as a porter and had left the Bakaara market after dark with his donkey-drawn cart. The market is a stronghold of Al Shabaab Islamic militants. He was traveling along a street on which African Union peacekeeping forces were based when he was shot.

“I think he was suspected because no one uses the street after the sun sets as the area is a battle zone. Al Shabaab fighters do have a military base near AMISOM’s,” an eyewitness, Mohammed Nur, said.
African Union Peacekeepers have not yet released any comment about the killing.
