Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud engaged in discussions with the EU Ambassador to Somalia, Ms. Karin Johansson, delving into matters encompassing security, development, and the ongoing democratization process within Somalia.
Their meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday saw the Ambassador reiterating the EU’s profound commitment to upholding Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
Both President Mohamud and the Ambassador underscored the imperative of fostering deeper collaboration between Somalia and the EU.
Notably, last month, Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy chief, conveyed the bloc's unwavering support for Somalia's territorial integrity and sovereignty during a phone conversation with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The EU emphasized the critical importance of upholding Somalia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, particularly in the aftermath of Somaliland's controversial agreement with Ethiopia.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi in Addis Ababa granted Ethiopia access to the Red Sea via the port of Berbera in Somaliland.
Somalia swiftly rejected the agreement, labeling it a menace to regional harmony and a blatant infringement upon its sovereignty.
