The Mozambican Deputy Fisheries Minister Gabriel Muthisse confirmed Wednesday that the country's fishing vessel, the "Vega 5", with 24 crew members has been seized by Somali pirates, reported China's Xinhua news agency. The vessel has been located in the Mozambique Channel heading north, away from its home port of Beira. Muthisse told state radio that the Mozambican authorities are doing all it can to save the lives of the occupants of the vessel, which reportedly seized on Friday. The government has not yet been in contact with the pirates and that measures are being taken to protect the lives of the 24 crew members including 19 Mozambicans, three Indonesians and two Spaniards. The "Vega 5" is operated by a Spanish-Mozambican company, Pescamar. The Spanish partner in this venture, Pescanova, said on Monday that the ship is now under constant surveillance. This is the second vesse to be hijacked by Somali pirates in Mozambique. About a month ago, the pirates seized another one, taking everything of value from the crew members.
