In a recent incident in Somalia, four Ukrainian citizens were captured by Al-Shabab extremists, affiliated with al-Qaida, following the crash of a UN-contracted helicopter. The Ukrainian foreign affairs ministry verified that the helicopter, operated by a Ukrainian company under a UN contract, experienced engine failure and was subsequently assaulted by militants associated with the terrorist group Al-Shabab.

Oleh Nikolenko, the spokesperson for Ukraine's foreign affairs ministry, disclosed that the abducted Ukrainians were part of the UN Mission crew. Unfortunately, one individual lost their life during the attack, and the remaining occupants were seized by Al-Shabab militants. The incident unfolded in Xindheere village in Galmadug, where the helicopter made an emergency landing due to engine failure.

While Al-Shabab is implicated in the assault, they have not claimed responsibility. In a separate but connected event, the group asserted involvement in a mortar attack near Aden Adde International Airport, resulting in the fatality of a UN Guard Unit member and causing damage to infrastructure.

The ongoing insecurity in Somalia necessitates a reliance on air travel for humanitarian missions, with Al-Shabab escalating attacks on military bases. This adds complexity to the phased withdrawal of the African Union peacekeeping force. Somalia's government, in its pursuit of modernizing its forces, recently celebrated the UN Security Council's decision to lift a three-decade arms embargo.
